Alternative schools less structured, less rigid | ome parents reject the public school system, not for lack of discipline, but because they feel it is too rigid and is incapable of catering to the individua! needs of children. , Sandra Yates took her daughter out of the regular school system because she elt the teachers were critical of the children and lacked a philosophy that sustained them. Yates chase the publicly funded Windsor House alternate school in the North Vancouver YMCA building because of its unique philosoy-Ay of non- coercive education. . “My daughter is not obliged to attend any class. She fills in her day as she feels hest,” says Yates. The 56 students start the week with an assembly ~ and create their own schedules with the teachers. “It’s very much like home schooling in that they follow their own interests ... but it is a more social form,” she says. . Student progress can be slow, because individu- als may neec| time to recover lost self-esteem or overcome learning problems. As some of the students are not ready to enter the regular secondary system as soon as others, the parents have hired their own secondary school teacher and are lobbying for extra funding from the school district and the Ministry of Education. Because the development of problem-solving and interaction skills are considered a priority, a community conflicts committee meets three times a week to discuss complaints from students, Yates enjoys the three-hours a week parents are required to contribute to the school. About 13 students attend the Wondertree School in Edgemont Village, which rejects authoritarian meitiods and operates on a “consensus model.” Each student must see that they are part of a group or community and agree to respect, listen and cooperate, - , They work along a scale of levels of consensus, with no sense of unity at one end, to being able to . say an unequivocal yes to a decisio at the other. Learning consultants, rather than teachers, per- form as role models and help the students “decide what it is they want to learn.” er There are periods when students are required to *. work on certain projects and others when they can work on what they want to. Some subjects, such as’, mathematics, spelling and French are offered every jay. ' Mentors, experts in various fields, drop in on occasion to offer enrichment. . According to learning consultant Patricia Fraser, 7 the consensus model allows students to develop. their interests and personal gifts, “to spend more time on what is more relevant to them.” : The cost is about $350 a month. ; Maria Galloway moved to the North Shore and took a 10-week parents’ course so that her daughter could attend the Waldorf School in Lynn Valley.: She had read about and was attracted to the school’s wholistic approach to children, focusing on their physical, mental and spiritual needs. - : “Each person has something unique to them to * accomplish in this life.
