north shore news MAIL BOX Theatre reviews rankle read Dear Editor: Martin Millerchip makes a few good points in his rather scathing review (Feb. Arms & The Man, currently phying at the Deep Cove Theatre, but he certainly leaves the impression that he sent someone else to review it rather than actually attending it himself. He's right: in saving that the actors playing Blantschii and Raina were wonderitl and perhaps both of the Petkofts could have overacted more to add more “bluster” to. their characters, but when he states that the director rewrote Shaw by passing the last line of the play from Sergius to Petkott, we really do have a case of the pot calling the kettle black! Millerchip manages to transfer Sergius’ romantic attentions, not from Raina ta Louka as Shaw does, but trom Raina oto) her mother, Catherine! He also moves Act 1 from Raina’s bedroom to Catherine’s hotel room. With Millerchip as director there is definitely the potential for 19) of making a late-night soap series here. There’s no excuse for this — Shaw makes it verv clear that the pretentious Petkoffs house has stairs, a library, and 2 bell for summoning the ser- vants. Tm sure the rest of the audience noticed this even if Millerchip didn’t. Perhaps a director should not move a fine from one char- acter to another but even so, | think Sergius completed his journey to self-realization quite successtully, with his res- ignation from the army and his rejection of “the higher love.” Anyone who listened to the play would have realized this and if Millerchip’s comments dissuade anyone from attend- ing this production then he does them a disservice. David Avery North Vancouver Time to resign, Mr. Clark Dear Editor: [ agree with Glen Clark's remark that “British Columbians don’t want per- petual politics, perpetual cam- paigning.” Sun, Feb. 17). However, this condition will never be resolved as long as he and his incompetent colleagues remain in power. The failure of all their enterprises and deecittil promises illustrate this party's inability te fulfil the mandate it achieved by deception.
