Disabled diver to teach

MAKO SPGRT Divers owner Bob Martin was recently
presented with a challenge by Vancouver’s Lenny Marriot.

Marriot, a one-legged swimmer,
came to Martin with ambitions of
becoming a diving instructor.

That was a few months ago.
Now, Marriot is well on his way to
reaching his goal and will be trav-
elling to Victoria in November to
undergo 10 days of testing to
receive his inscructor’s certifica-
tion.

“They're going to be watching
me like a hawk, I feel --’but that’s
fine,’’ said Marriot.

The two have together developed
techniques to overcome any handi-
caps.

For instance, Martin says, Mar-
riot has learned to swim differently
to maximize his speed for the tim-
ed swimming test, and Marriot
said he has had to develop a new
technique for pulling unconscious
divers out of the water on to land
safely.

one leg. Marriot was already an
advanced diver when he came to
Martin and deeply immersed in
athletics, having wheeled with Rick
Hansen and being a practitioner of
martial arts,

Marriot hopes to teach other
disabled divers when he gets his in-
structor’s certification, and is
already helping Martin teach his
diving classes.

Martin teaches all levels of div-

must write exams for one week in
