DINING:17 BOOKS:18 CINEMA:21 IT’S not just fans of The X-Files who are kept guessing about plot twists and char- acter development. Actors with recurring roles on the show fair no better. Don S. Williams has played Elder the past four sea- sons of the TV show and in The X-Files feature film. Still, when it was announced in March that Twentieth Century Fox Television would move series production to L.A. for the show’s sixth season, the veteran actor was left in the dark about his character’s fate. Te wasn’r till late June that Williams found out he was wanted for the season-opener, which will air Now. & on Global and the Fox network, Within days he was ona plane headed for L.A. and a week of shooting in Twentieth Century Fox's Soundstage 5 “Part of the mystique of the show is the production is run with the same guessing and the same mystery as the series itself says Williams, an industry veteran of 43 years and curren chair of the North Shore Arts Commission. “That it's done consciously adds to the whole mystique of the show.” Seereey extends to the set, says the actor. “We have to signa piece of paper that says we will not reveal the contents of the script.” Or his season-opening performance he will say only chat he was called in to do “the usual.” As the leader of a mysterious and high- lv secretive organization, and boss of the popular character Cigarette-Smoking Man, his scenes are “usually meetings of this group.” Williams was happy to see his role continue in season six since he wasn’t counting on a future with the show beyond his appear- ance in the X-Files movie Fight the Future released in lace spring.
