WY mayor no longer shoe-in for GVRD post Catherine Barr Contributing Writer MAYOR Pat Boname remains, but from now on West Vancouver’s mayor will ne longer automatically be appointed the munici- pality’s Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) direc- tor. Council voted Jan. 26 in favor of a motion that will now see West Vancouver's GYRD director chosen by a new, democratic process. In the past, the mayor automatically earned the GVRD title. But now council wants the power to vote on the issue. Next November, and every year thereafter, a GVRD director will be cho- sen from a list of neminated councillors wishing to land the job. The issue arose Jast December when Coun. Russ Fraser = questioned ~— the appointment process. He said it should be examined and possibly changed. He also called fora report on how other munici- palities appoint directors. This week, Coun. Allan Williams presented the report and made the motion to change the current appoint- ment process. Mayor Boname argued for maintaining the status quo. She called the GVRD position “sensitive” and said that the job requires experi- ence, security and confi- dence. “(Most) other municipali- ties appoint their mayors,” Boname said. “!t's an unusu- al procedure (to choose someone elsc).” Coun. Victor Durman was in favor of the change. He said it would give council a chance ro replace any representative who was not carrying out the job properly. The motion passed with only Coun. Bill Soprovich voting against the motion. “I don’t know why we are orcaking away from the sta- tus quo,” he stated. Williams then made a fur- ther motion. to retain Boname as GVRD director until November — a motion which passed unanimously. Coun. Ron Wood also remains as alternate director.
