The latter characteris- tic is the result of a volley- ball accident suffered in 1983. Probably spiked one too many bails into the soft belly of the Canadian estab lishment. But this sixth generation Torontonian moves with a mischievous energy and speaks with the clarity of a man confident in his convic- tions, a rebel-rouser who revels in tweaking the snouts 1 ‘ Call DEREK A. Most would insert “won- derful” in front of country in the preceding sentence, and I think Smokin’ Joe would too, but his exaspera- tion with the erosion of its once sterling character has become a life’s work. Farewell the Peaceful Kingdom is a 750-page brick devoted to documenting the ruin of Canada at the hands of arrogant politicians via pig-headed adherence to such programs as bilingual- ism, multiculturalism and a block-headed Charter of Rights and Freedoms. How about an arrogant disregard for the voice of Canadians? That too. Another of its overriding theses is that the precious freedoms this country now enjoys are in serious jeop- ardy because “most people in this society have no idea what personal freedom is: that it is a responsibiliry not a right; that it demands con- stant vigilance and strug- le...” That it demands citizens willing and eager to dissent. To stand up and say what they believe, whether they are right or wrong. Canadians need to know, says Smokin’ Joe, “that it’s OK to discuss; it’s OK to debate. Without debate we are lost.” No kidding. We are already well on the way to being lost now. The Doug Collins heresy trial is only the most recent manifestation of that confu- sion over what democracy is all about and what real free speech is all about. “This is not just about i exRZOIL Lube, oil & filter change Reg. $28.95 Pennzoil 10W30 Not valid with other offers * Open 7 days a week Mon-Sat 8:30am-6:30pm, Sun. 9:00am-5:00pm |All services fully wartanly approved Doug Collins and the North Shore News,” says Armstrong. “This is a seri- ous, serious issue taking place all over the country: the slow, invidious erosion of rights.” In a Sept. 23 address to the Association of Canadian Clubs, Armstrong called Canada a “nation that thrives on self-abuse :.. a country (that) has been turned into a victim-culture society as defined by its own Constitution.” Sounds familiar, does it not? The 63-year-old retired federal public servant, mer- chant banker and senior industrial development direc- tor for Canada at Expo 86 has been written off as a one-eyed clairvoyant, a wob- ble boy and a shiver sister by mainstream press for the views expressed in his writ- ings. But Smokin’ Joe makes a lot of sense to this West Coast rube and I suspect a host of other like-minded tubes. Wobbly boy, right wing loony — whatever the main- stream media wants to label Armstrong, so be it. We need more like him to keep this good ship Canada from hitting the rocks of the new fascism that are crop- ping up in rough waters around the North Shore News and anywhere else that orthodoxy is challenged. Smokin’ Joe packs more than a one-two punch. He’s got knock-out potential. But he’s up against some tough opponents.
