North Shore athletes in search of gold

NORTH Shore high school athletes are
heading to various parts of the province
this week and next in search of gold, sil-
ver and bronze at five B.C. high school
championships.

RUGBY

Closest to home are the B.C. boys’ triple-A
and double-A rugby finals at UBC as Carson
Graham — third place finishers in four of the
past five years — is ranked third in the 16-
team triple-A tournament. The Eagles com-
piled a perfect 7-0’ record during the regular
season and tied Lord Byng !4-14 in overtime
in the Lower Mainland zone final. Carson
meets Cowichan at 12:30 today. A win pits

them against St. Michgel’s or Vanier tomor-

row al 2 p.m.

Collingwood and Windsor, both 4-2 in
icague play, qualified for the double-A rugby
tourney for the first time. The Cavaliers, 14-8
winners over the Dukes in the zone final, are

ranked eighth and meet Lambrick Park at-

6:30 p.m. tonight.
Windsor is ranked 13th in the 16-team
draw and faces Ladysmith at 2 p.m. today.
The championships conclude Saturday.

SOCCER

The B.C. triple-A and-double-A girls’ soc-
cer championships, both with 16-teams, kick
off in Kamloops this week.

Handsworth (12-0 in league and playoff
action) and Centennial share top-ranking in .
triple-A, while the Balmoral Barons (8-5)
and Windsor (11-4) are ranked fourth and
ninth respectively in double-A action.

GOLF

The 36-hole B.C.. golf championships at
Oliver’s Fairview Mountain Club May 27-29
will. feature 21 schools. including: West |
Vancouver and Howe Sound.

The Highlanders carded _a- North: “Shore:
record team total of 300 in the’ North Shore
final at Capilano May 17. &

Leigh Tate shot 73, Dave Sheldon a 74,
Afex Tielker a 75 and Dennis Konasewich a
78. Runner-up Sounders qualified for the B.C.
championships for the first time with a 324.: -
