Three of the West Van middle school’s students were winners of this year’s KCTS/9 video competition. The Seattle TV station's contest, now in its eighth year, is open to students of middle and secondary schools in Washington and B.C. This year’s contest explored the theme of real-life heroes. Grade 9 student Brett Liljefors placed second for his computer-animated video, A Day in the Life of an Abstract Ball, Grade 8 twins Patrick and Philipp Postrehovsky placed third for Heroine, a documentary of their grand- mother’s heroic efforts in Nazi-occupied Czechoslova- kia. Hillside students have entered and won several video competitions in the past. Last year, students placed second, third and fourth in a B.C. schoo! filrn festival. “We're into films big time.” said Nancy Masterman-Boyd. a Hillside teacher who made the video contest a component of her Gride 8 and 9 social-studies classes, The three winners were awarded box seats for a Mariners game and tickets to the Seattle Art Gallery.
