time worrying about their transmis-
sions, but Frank Redavid, owner of
Econo Brake and Muffler, has seen
enough broken ones to warn drivers
to take care,

once a year.

“Everybody changes the oil, but
they never change the transmission
fluid,” said Redavid. “If | could
drill one thing into a customer's
head it would be that you have to
change your transmission fluid.”

He suid fluid breakdown causes
parts to deteriorate and is the num-
ber one transmission killer. “When
the fluid breaks down, it’s going to
burn the transmission and all of a
sudden the car is on a tow-hook.”

checking automatic transmission
fluid levels. These should always be

checked while the engine is warm.
Specific directions like gear place-
ment are usually spelled out on the
dipstick.

For manual transmissions, it is
important to check the gear oil. This
can be done by opening the
drainage plug and checking to see if
any fluid seeps out. If it does,
everything is in order.

Although many symptoms of a
problem transmission can occur.
Redavid says that the most common
include difficulties in getting into
gear when the engine is cold and
irregular engine revving while dri-
ving.
