A BABYSITTER is respon-
sible for the care and safety
of your children. Knowing
what to do in the event of a
fire and following proper
fire safety behavior to pre-
vent potential fires is an
important part of that re-
sponsibility.

Upon arrival at the home, the
babysitter should ensure that all
emergency numbers are written
near the telephone, and should
know where the parents can be
located in the event of an
emergency.

The premises should then be in-
spected and a mental fire escape
plan devised

The basic elements of the plan
should include:
» two ways out of each room,
> a method for assisting infants
or other children who could not
escape on their own, and

&G... ensure that all emergency numbers are
written near the telephone, and know where

» a mecting place outside of the
building (you should give the sitter
the name of a neighbor who will
be at home, in the event of an
emergency).

The babysitter should know the
location of any smoke detectors in
the home and ask the owners what
the alarm sounds like.

In the event of a fire the
children should be evacuated and
the babysitter, together with the
children, should go to a
neighbor’s home to call for help.

If a fire occurs and you cannot
teach one of the children, get
everyone possible out of the
house.

Go to a neighbor’s house to use
the telephone, notify the fire
department of the fire, and let
them know that someone is trap-
ped in the house.

in’) and the centre area being
painted by roller.

“cut in" one coat by brush and
then roll on two coats.

This would even out the
thickness between the two
methods of application.

You could also use corner
rollers on the walls, and edger
pads on ceilings and around win-
dows or door frames.

These tools would help elimi-
nate the heavier application of
paint around the perimeter.

Household safety; Check the
home for any fire hazards, watch
the children to ensure their safety.

Close bedroom doors after the
children are asleep. This helps to
protect them from smoke.

Check the home for matches or
lighters within reach of the
children.

Keep children and combustibles
away from space heaters.

Babysitters, never smoke while
on the job.

If cooking is necessary, always
watch food on the stove, and turn
any pot handles on the stove in so
that they will not extend over the
stove edge.
