Bowen park receives funding THE PROVINCIAL government has given the Greater Vancouver Regional District $94,444 as the first and second payments of a $141,667 GO B.C. grant to help develop Crippen Regional Park on Bowen Island. . Government Services Minister Lois Boone, the minister respon- sible for GO B.C., said Crippen Regional Park is becoming a pop- ular weekend destination which can be seached by a 15-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay. Complusive-eating disorder therapist Michele Plysiuk said the majority of teenagers who suffer from the chronic psychological disorder usually suffer in silence and experience a lot of guilt about their eating habits. “Adolescents with a com- plusive-eating disorder tend not to grow out of it. It becomes a life- tong thing,’” said Plysiuk. Plysiuk said some things that might alert parents to an adoles- cent’s complusive-eating problem include: @ dieting that starts at a young age (between cight and 10); @ fear of food and an adolescent expressing concerns about not be- ing able to stop eating food like ice cream; @ secret eating or attempts to cat when no one else is around; @ weight gain, excessive exercise or dieting; @concerns expressed about weight und body image; @ the expression of little rules concerning eating certain foods; @ the expression of guilt about eating; @ concerns about having control when around food. Plysiuk said complusive-eating disorder is not life threatening and it is different from other cating disorders such as anorexia or bulemia. Anorexia is life threatening because cf severe weight loss; it requires more medical intervention in treatment, while bulemia in- vdlves a binging and purging cy- cle. But Plysiuk said complusive eating disorder is a moderate con- dition that usually is easily treatable with therapy.
