And when it pours, it means some very unfriendly conditions for a race car driver. Such were the circumstances surrounding Race One of the 1990 Player’s Ltd./GM Motorsport Series, Canada's top level of *‘showroom stock’? racing, May 13 at Co- quitlam’s Westwood Motorsport Park. It would be the first test this season for local team Mahood Formula Racing, and after Satur- day’s qualifying, driver Andy Mahood gripped the wheel of his 1991 Camaro, confident in the knowledge he would hit the green flag on the front row. Qualifying had indeed gone well, and Mahood shared his leading row with ’89 rookie of the year, Trevor Seibert of Williams Lake. Two levels back sat triple champ Frank Allers and teammate Tony Morris. They would have to play catch-up. ‘‘We qualified where we wanted. Nobody wor- tied us, we were on the point,’’ said Mahood Iater. After four laps, Mahood’s Canon Cameras/Kokanee Beer machine was running comfortably in fourth, just behind Morris, Allers, and Edmonton’s Kevin Dowler; but ahead of Seibert and Rick Payne, another serious threat. Not wanting to push the equipment too hard too earty, the situation was well in control. In front, though, Morris was about to encounter trouble in the form of Sherrold Haddad, who had spun off track and would re- enter directly into the passenger decor of Morris’ car. The resulting collision, although not injury causing, eliminated both participants and began a 30 minute race stoppage. During this delay, the rain stopped, the track dried, and the flow of the event was radically altered. Mahood, in control of a car completely readied for wet condi- tions (and pre-race settings to make a huge difference), began to falter and drop. In contrast, Seibert had prepared for a drying track. His crew had guessed right, while Mahood’s and many others had not. “Within a couple of laps, the car became desperately slow," ex- plained a dejected Mahood later. “It was all over the track. I couldn’t do much but watch as cars passed here and cars passed there.’ Mahood droppea as low as 12th at one point, but kept a steady hand, recovering positions as many of those who had passed by, squirted off the oily pavement. The black Canon/Kokanee Camaro eventually finished eighth. ‘‘As the weekend began, this is just about the worst con- ceivable result I could envision,’’ finalized Mahood. is your leaking air- conditioner affecting the “OZONE LAYER”?
