14 - Friday, August 19, 1988 - North Shore News MULTI-FLOWERING PLANTS zers perfect iybridi , unusual tul ALTHOUGH MANY different kinds of bulb flowers already exist, Dutch hybridizers work constantly to perfect new forms. Among tulips, for instance, fr- inged tulips, multi-flowering tulips and viridiflora hybrids are recently created varieties that are now gain- ing popularity. Fringed tulips, also called Crispas, recently have been regrouped according to their shape; that is, a deiicately incised edge, truly like a fringe, around the edge of each petai. In fact, these tulips do not constitute a group in themselves. Rather, the individual cultivars actually are members of existing varieties, such as single early, double early, Darwin hybrid and some late-flowering categories, too. Thus, fringed cultivars bloom at different times of the season — from April through the end of May — instead of all together as do members of the same classifica- tion. FLOWERS POPULAR However, fringed tulips are not just popular because of the special appearance. They also make ex- cellent garden plants and cut flowers. Some of the especially notable ones are: Arma (cardinal red; early); Fringed Beauty (double-flowered; vermillion red with yellow edges); Burgundy Lace (wine red; late); Fringed Apeldoorn (orange-red; medium- early); Maja (yellow; late) and Blue Heron (purple-violet; late). Multi-flowering tulips offer a bouquet from each bulb — three, four or more flowers per stem. T. praestans Fusilier has been around for a long time but still is not used widely in Canadian gardens. Of its three to five bright red flowers, one is always the largest, like a mother hen with chicks. T. praestans also gives us a cultivar with variegated foliage, by the name of Unicum. Toronto (orange-red with green base), Georgette (yellow with some orange-red veins), and Orange Bouquet (orange-red) are single, late-flowering tulips with several large blossoms on each stalk. GREEN PETALS A third category of unusual tylips is the type called viridiflora, whose petals show a considerable amount of green. These, too, do Electrolux Frank fantorno H Sales & Service § on the North Shore f for 23 years 985-7691 por. 667-7775 not comprise their own classifica- tion but are grouped with the single late tulips with which they share many other characteristics. Their form, however, is slender and the petals are usually pointed, reminiscent of lily-flowered varieties.
