53 ~ Sunday, December 20, 1987 - North Shore News oys’ pasketball season THE NORTH Shore high school senior boys’ basketball league is anticipated to have a wide-open anybody’s race type of season. Here’s the rundown on the 10 teams. Argyle Pipers, currently given honorable mention ranking among B.C. “AA” schools, have three key Grade IIs — Darin Burr, Shipho Riopel and Stuart Howe — up from tast year’s North Shore junior champions to augment plenty of returnees from last year’s highly-iated senior team. Included among the Grade 12s are 6'8"’ Brian Pomeroy, a North Shore first all-star last season; Chris Sargent, Mark Shtenko and Vince Pollock. Coach Peter Therrien is in his sixth year with the senior Pipers, who sport a 3-] won-lost league record going into the Christmas break. Carson Graham Eagles, with a 4-2 league mark, also have several mainstay players back for their Grade 12 year, notably 6°7"’ Troy Millington, Fabio Walker, Brent Black, Lane Oscen and Rob Bouchette. David Hoskins is the best of those up from the junior team. Coach Vern Porter, 12 years at the helm of the Eagles, took last year’s squad to the Howe Sound “AA” zone final. His assistant is Jerry Donohoe. Handsworth Royals are coached by Ed Pedersen, the league’s veteran with 26 years behind him at North Vancouver and Hand- sworth, and Len Corben, whose juniors were second on the North Shore last season. The Royals, also 4-2, have Tom Atkins, Ian Bird and Paul Pepin among those returning, plus last year’s junior starters: Rusty Cor- ben, Chris Loewen, Derck Gor- don, Dave Torrance and Warren Barker. Hillside Highwaymen, under B.C. provincial under-16 boys’ coach Randy Young in his sixth season with the school’s seniors, look to Grade 12s Chris Jeffery, Graham Brink, Kenny Campbell and Paul Haagenson plus Grade 11 John Topping. Nicest surprise, however, is the play of two Grade 10s — Brett Eaton from Ontario and Paul Zuccato. Hillside is 0-1 in league play. Howe Sound Sounders, 1-2 at the break, have a run and gun club under conches Bill Rizun, who moves up with the best of his 1986-87 juniors like Frank Fedorak, Chris Bowcock and Mark Oord; and Doug Sheffield, who has coached the seniors on and off since 1979. Paul Wiles and 6'7” Travis Moyle, who didn’t play basketball last year, are both in Grade 12. St. Thomas Aquinas Saints, 0-4 to date and playing senior ball for the first time since 1964, have the league’s tallest player in 6’8%" Grade 11 Raffaele Panzetta. Coach Chris Sumner, in his first year at STA after an excellent coaching record at Holy Trinity Elementary, starts two other Grade lls in Danny Bernier and Aaron Bruce, who has been on and off with a persistent ankle injury. Terence McGee, Rob Perdue and Marcel Le Beche are the key Grade 12s. Sentinel Spartans, 4-1, are cur- rently an honorable mention B.C. “AA” pick after its pepulation in- crease put the school over the limits for ‘SA’ participation this fall. Derek Christiansen, who was a ON BEHALF OF MELCO DEVELOPMENTS AND THE TENANTS OF DELBROOK PLAZA WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS & A HAPPY NEW YEAR North Shore second all-star as a Grade {0 student last year; Mark Watson, a B.C. tournament first all-star when the Spartans finished second in the B.C. ‘‘A” finals, and Frank Catala, Andy Fieming and Kent Bubbs are all back. Add to this Mark Pearmain, fun Henson, and Luke Meyer from a good junior team. Coaches are again Ken Sherk and Digby Leigh. Sutherland Sabres, currently 0-4, is coahet by former University Hill mentor George Jolly who is in his first ‘season 7 the North Shore. Entering tu> league late with a DR. Michael Ignacz Practice of General Dentistry mixture of Grade J0 to 12 players, few with much hoop experience, the Sabres will rely on strength on the boards led by Brad Baker. West Vancouver Highlanders are coached by first-year senior coaches Bruce Holmes and Jan Miller, who have moved up with last year’s junior team along with outstanding players Nigel Parish, Adam Ashurt and Brooks Findlay among others. The Hightanders are also blessed with a good array of returning seniors like Chris \Weitzal, Ross Gurney, Mike Hodges, Glenn Johnson and Don Hughes. Their 0-3 record is deceptive. Windsor Dukes, last year’s North Shore champions and now the only unbeaten team at 4-0, are made up of the Langley family and supporting cast. Coach Phil Langley, into season number six with Windsor’s seniors after shorter stints at Sentinel and Argyle, has both his sons in the starting lincup. Paul, in Grade 12, was the league's top player last year. Todd is only in Grade 10. Other impor- tant cogs are Duane Gartman, Brent Bradshaw, David McCuirns, Geoff Bowering and Steve Hardy. pews PIZZAMANIAN Gourmet Pizzas Free Detiveries 984-4541 Quality & Service are still here DELBROOK ONE HOUR CLEANING 987-7921 TRAVEL All Your Car 986-5391 Needs Texaco a 987-2515
