2 - Wednesday, December 2, 1987 - North Shore News Polar 8 design contract awarded | THE DESIGN contract for the $350 million Polar Class 8 icebreaker was officially awarded Friday to North Van- couver’s Versatiie Pacific Shipyards Inc. and its Vancouver partner, Sandwell Swan Wooster Inc. Worth $7.9 million, the contract will cover the estimated nine mon- ths that it will take Versatile and Sandwell Swan Wooster to pro- duce a design and construction proposal for what will be the world’s largest icebreaker. When the federal government signed the letter of intent awarding the design and construction of rhe Polar 8 to the two companies in August, estimated time for the start of actual vessel construction was mid-1989. Completion date for the icebreaker is mid-1992. Employ- ment provided for Versatile’s North Vancouver and Victoria yards will run up to 1,000 jobs over an 18-month peak period. In announcing the design con- tract award, the federal gov- ernment stated that Canadian con- tent of the design phase will be 90 per cent while Canadian content in the construction phase will be 75 per cent. . Approximately 70 people will be involved in the Polar 8's design phase. Though, as reported in the Nov. 29 News, delivery of Versatile’s $92 million Polar Class 4 icebreaker Henry Larsen to the Canadian Coast Guard has been delayed until late next spring because of defective power trans- formers, Versatile president David Alsop has said the delay will have no effect on his company’s Polar 8 preparations.
