14 - Friday, October 17, 1986 ~ North Shore News THE ESCALATING costs of home heating, no matter what fuel we use, makes it imperative to in- vestigate every possible way of conserving energy. The benefits will accrue not only in our own pockets but in the long run to the country as a whole. We all know that the energy we are using to heat our homes is a nonrenewable resource. While there are many alternate sources of energy now being developed solar, atomic, hydrogen, none have really developed to the point where they are a viable alternative. One partial solution now being used by many pcople is sup- plementary heating in the form of air-tight stoves or fireplace inserts. These devices use wood (a renewable but ever-more expensive heat source) as a fuel. Many homes have built-in fireplaces but they are not as effi- cient since more heat goes up the chimney than goes into the house. This can be remedied to somewhat, by the installation of glass doors and efficient dampers but the true degree of efficiency is question- able. tf you are not prepared to go in- to the area of supplementary heating, there are a variety of products that will help you be not only comfortable this winter but will help save you money. One of the newest products on the market are the removable caulks that can be used to com- pletely seal a window in the fall when the window will not be opened anymore, then peeled away in the spring with no residue or damage to the paint. Another product along the same lines is the crystal-clear plastic sheet that is applied in the fall and temoved in the spring. After installation, heat from a hairdryer is directed at the surface and the sheet becomes so taut it eliminates al! wrinkles and becomes almost invisible. For larger gaps around windows or doors there is the expandable foam insulation. This comes in an aerosol can with a long tube that fits on the nozzle. The foam can be directed into the hole or gap where it hardens in place. This material is moisture- OPEN resistant and is not subject to mould or fungus. These are only a few of the many products that will help you save money. There are many other areas through which we can conserve energy thereby conserving money, One of these is to keep your plumbing in good shape. A toilet that runs constantly can literally waste thousands of gallons of water in one billing period. Lawn watering is another area where you can conserve water. Timers are now available to shut off a hose. FRIDAY ‘TIL 9 P.M. SUNDAYS 12-5 P.M.
