Every Business Information Centre has handbooks and brochures with detailed, up-to-date information, such as one on operating an independent retail, servicing or manufacturing business. In addition to printed materials, centre users can choose from more than a dozen video presentations, including How Will You Find Capital and How To Buy a Business/Franchise. Another important service is free, confidential business counselling, by phone or in person on a one-on-one basis through the Ministry of Industry and Small Business Development. The establishment of the more than 80 Business Information Cen- tres in the province reflects the vital role played by small and me- dium-sized businesses. Of 1,090,000 people employed by businesses in B.C., 510,000 — or 46.8 per cent — worked for businesses employing from one to 19 people, according to 1979 estimates from the Statistics Canada Business Register. Increasingly, women have become a major force in Canada’s business community. In the last decade, women started small businesses at three times the rate for men.
