ter in view of the fact that the
last nuclear weapons on
Canadian soil were removed
— without fanfare — in July.
(The excitement about

with Russia has been a bit
overdone, since by the time
they got to the base we'd all
be mincemeat anyway.)
Actually, what was
astonishing to me, as a long-
time opponent of nuclear
weapons, was just how little
dancing in the streets there
was when the news finally
broke that the last 55 nuclear-
tipped Genie missiles had
been returned to the United
States E

Comox. . : :
I thought it was rather nig-

gling of B.C.’s peace activists .

What Ms. Carney can of-
fer now, if she decides to
revive the nuclear power in-
quiry promised by Joe Clark,
during his brief tenure as ov-
cupant of 24 Sussex Drive, is
a chance for Canadians to
face the looming hypocrisy of
having become an unarmed
nuclear power that Mlogs the
equipment and material to
build bombs to any basket-
case country with the hard
currency or strawberries, as
the case may be, to cut a deal.

Canadian-built reactors are
in use or being built in India,
Pakistan, Argentina, South
Korea (where ane recently
leaked), Taiwan and
Romania.

Canada is running neck-

States and South Africa as
the world's chief uranium ex-
porters, but we should jump
into the lead this year as
South African production
stabilizes and U.S. produc-
tion slips.

Keeping in mind two
salient facts — that uranium
from northern Saskatchewan
fueled the bombs ¢ropped on
Hiroshima and Nagaskai and
that India used plutonium
from a Canadian reactor to
build its first) so-called
“peaceful” nuclear bomb —
an action which forced
Pakistan into the nuclear
arms race, also using Cana-
dian technology and uranium
