The show promises to swe visions,’ if you have the courage to attend August 13 at 8 p.m. PRAXIS COLLECTION Drawings by sculptors THE PRAXIS Collection, a new exhibition of works on paper by a group of inter- nationally recognized con- temporary artists, opens August 10 at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The 37 drawings, collages, and photographs, were pro- duced between 1940 and 1981, primarily by sculptors, of American, European, Canadian and Australian origin. Included are such artists as Alexander Calder, Jan Dib- bets, David Smith, Reg Butler, Eduardo Paolozzi, Man Ray, George Segal and Robert Smithson. The exhibition, which con- tinues through September 16, was Organized by the Van- couver Art Gallery under curator Scott Watson. **Most of the pieces in the collection are by sculptors. Some are working drawings, replete with notations and erasures, which describe the formative stages in the mak- ing of a work of art. Others are works of art, complete in themselves,’’ Watson explains. ‘*The collection is eclectic and reflects some of the ma- jor artistic developments of the past four decades. It in- cludes figurative, abstract, minimal and conceptual pieces,’ Watson added. Watson points out that the Praxis Collection was mounted as a supplement (o the Seagram Collection of drawings by sculptors, also installed in the Fourth Floor. Many of the contemporary developments and ideas are expressed in both exhibitions, and works by Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, Bruce Naumann and Robert Smithson.
