The conflicting emotions of the two departments have been raised by fires — the lack of them in West Van- couver and the plethora of them in North Vancouver City. *‘We had two reported fires in all of January,” says fire prevention officer Tom Payne of West Vancouver. Both fires, one of which hit a car, were minor according to Payne. It may be that North Van- couver City got West Van- couver’s share of fires during the month however. ‘We're trying to get back to normal here,’’ said a busy Perry Manns, an inspector with the North Van City fire- fighting force. ‘‘All hell broke loose in January.’’ North Vancouver City started the month of January with the Flamingo Apart- ment fire that burned out more than half of the occupants.
