most people head for the
bathroom,
their control panels.

The centre is _ fully
automated. By pressing
buttons operators can
control the flow of water
anywhere in the region from
West Vancouver to Langley,
an area of 677 square miles.

Trained operators are on
duty at the control centre
round-the-clock. When a
problem hits, lights flash and
an alarm sounds.

The GVRD is responsible
for acquiring the water,

they head for -

maintaining the supply,
ensuring its quality and
delivering it to the Lower
Mainland municipalities.
The municipalities are
responsible for local
distribution within their own
boundaries.

Water is a valuable but
inexpensive commodity and
it is being used in ever in-
creasing amounts in Greater
Vancouver

This year the GVRD will
supply about 65,700,000,000
- 65.7 billion - imperial
gallons to municipalities.
That’s equivalent to 57,000
gallons for every person
living in the region....156
galions per person per day.

The GVRD sells the water
to member municipalities at
cost which this year is 14
cents per thousand gallons.
The municipalities in turn
sell it to their consumers at
whatever rate they set.

five dams, 14 resevoirs and
five storage tanks at key
locations in Greater Van-
couver, 11 pumping stations
and 250 miles of supply
mains.

The storage. lakes and
dams (except for Cleveland
Dam on the Capilano River)
are located within the three
GVRD watersheds -
Capilano, Seymour and
Coquitlam - where the water
is collected. For security
reasons these areas are
closed to the public.

Because ‘the watershed
areas are uninhabited and
closed to general acess,
water treatment consists
only of screening and
moderate chlorination. The
quality of the water is ex-
cellent...soft and clear
except on the rare occasion
when there is a slide in a
storage lake.

Water samples from all
three systems are tested
daily in GVRD labs.

While each of the three
watersheds is a separate
system serving specific area:
of the region, they are all
linked together. If one
