A group of Lynn - Valley residents are ready to “put our money where our mouths are,” and pay S50 per cent of the cost of a feasibility study in hopes their alternatives to a planned devélopment will win out. Jim Hurley, 1505 Lynn Valley Road, addressed North Vancouver District council at a public hearing Monday. He represented over 90 area residents opposed to the replacement of the small. grocery store at 1501 Lynn Valley Road with a development that would include three retail outlets North Vancouver City council is considering the possibility of extending the railway tunnel beside the Lonsdale Quay site sometime in the future. And for this reason they have given the City Engineer permission to meet with a representative of the British Columbia Development Corporation (BCDC) to allow this to take place. The extension of the tunnel from the portal east of Rogers Avenue to a new portal between Semisch Avenue and Forbes Avenue would not take place for “for at least 20 to 30 years.” But because it may take place, City council wants BCDC to require buildings in the Lonsdale quay development next to the rail line, to have deeper foun- dations and a greater set- back from the rail line. The Development Cor- poration is opposed to the Suggestion because digging deeper foundations will add significantly to the cost of the buildings. Protesters objected to the plan, citing increased traffic, litter, rowdyism and devalued property as major arguments. As well, they noted there is no need for more retail outlets in the area and that it is premature to proceed with the project before con- sidering the Lynn Valley Plan, now before the District advisory planning com- mittee. . They would rather see a garden apart- ment development on the site. , - “We believe such a garden apartment development would overcome all the objections of the residents,” said Hurley. He _ also suggested this alternative would be better for the developer on grounds of economic viability.
