What made you want Co get into potities?: “lve always been interested in politics. | had an uncle who was very active in politics in the United States, he was a senator down there. As a young chap, f was kind of inspired by the fact that this uncle was very active in politics. *T've always been interested in public affairs. | joined the United Nations Association when { was in university and joined up with the Liberal politicai club out there so | just graduated towards that sort of thing. I felt there was something useful | could do in that field and like most politicians, you just stumble into it.’” Is the life of a senator very tough?: “It's tough fora British Columbian to be in Ottawa — period. You go back and forth, at times almost weekly. | talked toa chap from eastern Canada on the flight, and he said: ‘I just don’t know how you do it, you westerners, my gosh. | took one trip last month and I’m stiff re- covering.’ Well, he can’t have a very good constitu- tion if it takes him a month to recover. ‘The travel is tough and living out of a suitcase is N WORDS Travel is one of Senator’s toughest jobs tough. When people go to Ottawa they make one of two decisions: They decide that they'll either live there or live here and commute it one direction o the other. | made the decision to stay in North Van- couver. } think it's a powerful incentive to get back to your people more frequently.” What is the hardest part of your job?: “That's dif- ficult to say because people are always coming up to you with different problems. For example. a chap came to me this week and he nad his car seized at the border. It was a very good car and he didn’t file his appeal in time so we're trying to find out if grounds exist to have his case heard, but they’ve now sold the car. That’s very serious for that particular person, it’s more important than the GST to him right now.”” What do you like to do to relax?: ‘lam an amateur photographer, I do color processing and black and white processing when | have the time. | have my own greenhouse and grow odd plants from seeds. | like swimming.
