introduce Iranian Kurdish
music to people abroad.

Ardeshir agrees adding
“the poor quality of our
instruments affects the per-
formances. In some countries
like Russia, they have hun-
dreds of varieties of any given
instrument. It shows that
music is important to them.”

The English company that
organized the Kamkar tour
couldn't afford to bring over
the ensembilc’s dancers.
“Many music groups come
out of Iran to perform with
only a few players,” says

Bijan.

Kamkar is made up of
seven brothers, one sister and
her son, and every member
plays a different instrument.

“Our father (Hassan
Kamkar, one of the great
musicians and composers of
his era) worked as 2 musician
on national Jranian TV and
radio between 1950 and
1976, But (in our culture) a
musician is not well respect-
ed,” says Bijan. “That was
the main reason for us to
prove that our father was
right, and wz decided to fol-
low his path. Then the music
became our life.”
