n FOR nearly 20 years the name Emily Murphy has stood for safery. Run by the North Shore Crisis Services Society, Emily Murphy House has provided free emer- gency shelter, counselling and support services to women and children living in, or fleeing from, abusive relation- ships. But after a year- Jong debate the board has renamed its shelter to SAGE Transition House — an acronym for Shelter, Advocacy, Growth and Empowerment, and sug- gested by a woman staying at the home. Emily Murphy, the first female judge in the British Empire, was one of the so-called “Famous Five” women who led the fight to change Canadian law and allow women to be recognized as persons. But Muzphy has come under fire for her views on blacks, Jews and eastern Europeans, and advocating ‘eugenic sterilization.
