HE FIRST concert ina series to benefit the cash-strapped Vancouver Museum sees doe-eyed Vancouver pop waif Sarah McLachlan in concert July 24 at Vanier Park. The bill, beginning at 2:30 p.m., is rounded out with two other promising up-and-coming Canadian acts, Toronto’s Lost and Profound, and 19-year-old Nova Scotian fiddler Ashley Macisaac. The Sunflower Sundays con- cert series is sponsored by VanCity and produced by the museuni's executive committee with help from Sam Feldman and Community Box Offices head Umeeda Switlo of Nerth Vancouver. The museum is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, but it is by no means in good shape as it clocks its second century. it has lost federal funding and some civic money. And there’s also a little prob- lem with profile. Switlo said peo- ple generally don’t know where to find it (the museum is housed inside the Planetarium at Vanier Park in Kitsilano). The affair promises to be a genteel one with gourmet picnic meals available on-site. Transplanted sunflowers will be complemented with sunflower paintings by North Vancouver artist Arnold Shives. The artists has also worked up a sunflower T-shirt to support the benefit event. The North Shore mountains will provide the backdrop for the concert. There’s room for 5,000 people at the concert site. Macisaac, much-lauded as a fiddling wonder, is well-placed to make a run at stardom given a popular trend favoring all things Celtic. World-beat traveller Paul Simon recently feli upon Maclsaac. The fiddler appears on an album of Edie Brickell, Simon's wife. Following an appearance at this year’s Music West confer- ence in Vancouver, Maclsaac was scooped up by A&M Records. The Cape Breton musician plays a style of music with roots in Scotland. Trak Media enter- tainment doyenne Sorelle Saidman likens the aural effect to Don Messer’s Jubilee meeting the Clash. Bentall is promised to put in an unplugged acoustic set. The second show is set for Sunday, Aug. 28, at Vanier Park. Free parking is available at the nearby Molson Brewery site.
