Video Barbecue heats
up summer jazz scene

hepsters are shootin’ the neon curl on a gritty urban
riff. it's whacky, a kinda beatnik-jazzy kinda thing and
it’s tough to suppress ambulatory urges or wipe the grin off

ike man, alternative-musically speaking these bonzo

while listening.

Video Barbeque have just
released a second recording. Their
first picked uptthe CARAS award
for Best Independent Album of
“1990.

Coast 1040 Radio has focused

‘on Buster Gets Burnt and Squash-
ed Fly for regular rotation.

The band plays live locally on
Aug. 9 at Cates Park in North
Vancouver at the third annual

extravaganza.
Music Now recently talked to -
Greg Boothroyd, Video Barbeque
bass player and North Vancouver
personage. -
Music Now: Where does this
eclectic Video Barbeque sound
come from?
G.B. : “Well, it’s really an’
amalgamation of all the different
members. Everyone does a lot.of
listening to different kinds of
music, and we've all just incor-
porated them into the sound.
“I think one of the main
“reasons it works so well is that in
rehearsals we're all really open to
_a lot of different ideas. Somebody
“will bring in a tune, and someone"
will say why don’t we do this as a
tango instead of a swing. We'll try
-iLout, and often it will work.
Tnat’s what happened with a song
:called Cucuimber.”’
-Music Now: It’s a pretty big band.
At the best of times these kinds of
‘situations‘are like intense mar-
riages. How is the dynamic be-
tween players?
G.B.: “We're all pretty good
friends. It’s a hell of a job.to orga-
nize the band. Everyone has their
own interests. We all play in dif-
ferent bands — Brian and ! play in
the Jazzmanian Devils, and Tony -

plays in about six bands and same...

with Rob — they're very accive in
modern jazz.

“Tony has a couple of his own
groups, he has a quintet and a
double quartet. They play really
quite innovative stuff. David is go-

ing to art schoo! at Emily Carr, and -

Scott is building pianos. Everyone
has a lot of diverse interests. It
makes it a fun band to play in.
Aron is going to music school at

McGill (University) so that makes it -

“Well Tony and Rob both
claim to have come up with the
name on Hornby Island.

“It was a message from Mars or
something, but it conjures up a lot
of images, ard | think it’s pretty
appropriate for our band.

Music Now: As far as putting out a
CD, did you guys try and get some
label action first?

G.B. : “We do have Cargo
distributing it, but no one has
signed us per se. We're kind of
hoping to go on a slow burn for
that. We sent it out to some peo-
ple. It’s not an easy project to
market.

“We often get other musicians
to sit in. Sometimes we run a big-
ger group; we get 10 or so extra
horns for a big band. We invite
extra people up.”

Music Now: | understand that
quite a few of you are from the
North Shore. .

G.B. : ‘I live in North Van, Brian
grew up in West Van, Aron and
Dave are from North Van. Actually
the North Shore connection came
later.

“Originally Scott, Rob and }
were just jamming together. We
met Tony, and gradually we got
more and more members in the
group, and it just solidified.

Music Now: This CD release isn’t
your first, is it?

G.B. : ‘‘We did a tape before.

We won Shindig a few years ago,
and you win recording time out of
that. We used our recording time
to release a tape (the self-titied
Video Barbeque).
