NEWS BRIEFS Drugs seized A BRIGHTON Beach resident faces drug-related charges following the April 23 seizure of 100 marijuana plants by North Varcouver RCMP drug section members. According to 2 police spokesman, John Dosh faces charges of marijuana cultivation and possession of mar- juana for the purpose of trafficking. The police found the plants growing in a garden shed at Brighton Beach in the Indian Arm area. The estimated street value of the plants is pegged at $100,000. Brighton Beach resident Louise Ann Manelia was charged with possession of marijuana after six plants were seized from her residence. Meanwhile, a North Vancouver man was arrested on April 14 at Jack Lonsdale’s Pub in North Vancouver. Nickie Kranicz, 25, was found to be in possession of 77 grams of cocaine with an estimated street value of $7,700. The police also seized $3,866 in cash. A charge of possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking has been laid against Kranicz. Hearing set A JUNE 22 preliminary hearing date has been set for the mao charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Dr. Verne Flather, who was killed in front of his East Keith Road house on April 22. The hearing is set for five days, but as yet, no judge is available to hear the case. The accused, David Roger Henderson, 49, of North Vancouver, was in court briefly on Friday to set the hearing daie. Henderson’s lawyer, Elaine Ferbey, said her client was “getting very anxious’’ because a preliminary hearing date had not beer set. Henderson, a grey-bearded man, watched his lawyer speak and briefly looked at spectators during his court appearance. He quickly averted his cyes after looking at a group of Flather's relatives seated at the closest point to where Henderson was standing. Wreathes laid A WREATH-laying ceremony will be held today at the Sailcr’s Memorial in the North Vancouver City Water- front Park in remembrance of the many Canadian soldiers who served during the Battle of the Atlantic. The year 1992 marks the 50th anniversary of the deepest enemy attacks conducted into Canadian territory in modern times. In 1942, German submarines sank 23 ships in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and its appraoches. During that time 250 Canadian and Allied soldiers lost their lives. A contingent of HMCS Discovery, naval officers and veterans associations, commissionaire corps and military associated groups will participate in the commemoration. The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. A 200-BED multi-level care facility proposed by the Kiwanis for a four-acre site located on the south side of Mount Seymour Parkway just west of Berkley Road got the go ahead from North Vancouver District Council on Monday night. But an adjacent one-acre site that was to have housed the first commercial centre in the proposed Windridge Development will go back to the drawing board. NVD fastest growing municipality - census Population up 10% from 1986 NORTH VANCOUVER District easily ranked as the fastest growing of the three North Shore municipalities over the past five years, according to recently released Statistics Canada census figures. North Vancouver District numbered 75,157 inhabitants in 1991, a 10.1% increase over the 1986 district population of 68,241. North Vancouver City was home to 38,436 residents, up 7.7% from a population of 35,698 in 1986. West Vancouver had 38,783 res- idents as of last year, a 6.9% in- crease over a population of 36,266 recorded in 1986. In terms of average density, North Vancouver District had 465 people per square kilometre in 1991, a 10.5% increase over the 1986 figure of 420.6 people per square kilometre. North Vancouver City’s density was 3,568.8 people per square kilometre in 1991, 6 7.6% increase over 3,314.6 in 1986. In West Vancouver, census takers recorded a density of 435.3 ple per square kilometre in 1991, up 7% from 407.1 in 1986.
