54 - Wednesday. July 10 1991 - Morin Shore News Carson teacher retires from lon THE END of this school year also marked the end of an cra at Car- son Graham Secondary school in North Vancouver. Teacher and Carson Graham department head Howard Thomp- son retired. He is the only teacher at the school who has taught con- tinuously in the school since it opened in 1965. After completing service in the Royal Canadian Air Force, Thompson chose to go into welding and had become a foreman welder at Burrard Dry Dock before muking a career change to teaching. In the meantime. he had built several houses and still continues an interest in concrete and stone work. An accomplished singer and musician, he also headed a group that entertained at local hospitals for several vears. Starting his teaching career 31 years azo at Kitsilano Secondary school, it was not until he came to Carson Graham that he was really given the opportunity to demon- strate his remarkable variety of talents. Thompson and his welding stu- dents built a barbecue for the Kinsmen big enough to handle a full-size steer and a 22-foot alu- minum fishing boat. Thompson was also the spark plug behind a school carnival with the entire gym converted to a mid-way, 2 scream-a-second house of horrors winding through the corridors. Many of the traditions and events that have been a feature of Carson Graham's first 25 years have been in large measure a result of the inspiration and energy of Thompson, He arranged the visit: by the 1967 Carson Graham Award win- ner to Expo 67 in Montreal and the visit by the 1969 winner to Cape Canaveral for the Apollo It lift-off and to the Houston Space Centre for the first moon landing. Thompson has also been per- sonally responsible for the design, carving and production of the thousands of plaques, shields, trophies and awards presented to Carson Graham students over the past 25 years.
