North Van swimmer wins gold at meet NORTH VANCOUVER’S Michelle Salle stunned spectators at the Vancouver Aquatic Centre last week asshe won a gold medal atthe Canadian Summer Nationals. Sallee, 17, dug in to edge Calgary's Erin Holland in’ the women’s 1,500 metre freestyle. She finished in 16 minutes, 48.71 seconds with Holland com- ing at 16:49.15. The bronze was captured by Pegey Corkum of Etobicoke, Ont. with a time of 16:50.77. Sallee swims with the Pacific Dolphin Swim Association under coach Tom Johnson. Another North Shore resident in the 1,500-metre free was Carrie Fowlie, 14, who finished eighth. Meanwhile, in the women's 800-metre freestyle, Sallee finished third, following Holland who won a silver medal. Nikkie Dryden of Victoria won a gold. Her performance in the 1,500 earns her a spot on the Canadian team at the Pan Pacific Champi- Onships which will be heid Aug. 21-25 in Edmonton. (The top two swimmers in each event qualify for the Pan Pacifics.) Recently graduated from Hand- sworth, Sallee was a member of the Canadian Commonwealth Games team in New Zealand where she was a finalist in the 800 and 1,500 metre freestyle. Other Nerth Shore swimmers eligible for the summer nationals include Greg Miller, Claire Mat- thews, Sarah Matthews, Vaughn Thompson and Christian Von Fersten.
