I would like to reply to the concerns expressed by those Canadians who responded to the recent campaign by the Canadian Tobacco Manufacturers’ Council. Tobacco kills more than 35 O00 Canadians every year. It is the major preventable cause of heart and lung disease. Virtually all new users of tobacco products are teenagers. The recent tobacco tax increase is € to reduce the number of teenage smokers by 100 000 and prevent 25 000 of them from dying prematurely of tobacco-related illnesses. Iam greatly heartened by the strong support for the tax and other measures to reduce tobacco use received from health groups, non-smokers and former smokers. As more Canadians realize the tax is a public health measure, they, too, will support it. Canada is a world leader in reducing tobacco use. We have achieved this through public awareness and education programs, by restricting tobacco advertising, restricting smoking on airplanes and in government buildings, requiring health warnings on cigarette packages, increasing the taxes on tobacco, and assisting tobacco growers in finding alternative crops. The government will continue to encourage Canadians to adopt healthy lifestyles. It is our hope to see a tobacco-free generation by the year 2000.
