« 7 28 — Wednesday, May 8, 1991 — North Shore News Deadly kiss lacks suspense A Kiss Before Dying * (Universal) Rated 8 (at the Park & Tilford, Station Square, Clearbrook and Granville, Coquitlam, Scott, Hillcrest Cinemas) Nes he newspapers call it “The Carlsson Curse.”’ First the unhappy mother had a headline-grabbing afiair, followed by suicide. Now, daughter Dorothy Carllson (Sean Young in a olond wig) has apparently taken a swan dive from 20 floors up. But we know it’s no curse this time. It’s murder, Jonathan Corliss (Matt Dillon) has, for murky reasons, fiteraily tossed his fiancee over. Clearly, this relentless sociopath has a plan, because he shows up a cou- ple of killings later as Jay Farraday romancing Dorothy's twin, Ellen (Sean in long brunette tresses). Jonathan/lay is supposed to be a clean-cut charmer, shrouding his evil with a nice-guy facade. But is it just me or does Matt Dillon look like a demented Dick York? You know, the husband on Bewitched (only with a hooded brow and eyes like a pair of eight balls). Even when he’s piaying a little tag football or making love with his blissfully ignorant partner, he seems to be glowering. As if his brooding looks aren’t warning enough, Ellen takes a long time to figure out why her in- vestigation into her sister's death is constantly stymied. You'd think that since everyane who knew Dorothy has been hanged or chopped up, Ellen might wake up and smell the cafe au lait. And 1 do mean wake up. Sean sleepwalks through the role as if Tim Bell FILM REVIEW she mistook one of her lines for stage directions: ‘‘After my sister died, | was just a zombie.” So, in- stead of a perfarmance, we get hairstyles. Lots of them. First the doomed blond wig, then long black hair, then a short brunette style (a mirror image of Dillon), a wisely brief flirtation with short blond hair (a la Andy Warhol) and finally back to the Dilion look. So now it isn’t only Sean's hair- dresser who kriows for sure — you do, too. Her hair color offers the only suspense in this dreary time-waster. Kiss this one goodbye.
