Their purpose, according to Witness lit- erature, is to become part of the heavenly kingdom, to bring mankind back to perfection and vindicate God's name. Many people wonder what goes on inside those utilitarian-looking Kingdom Halls. Far from ritualistic, the Chris- tian meetings are best described as communal Bible and _ religious study. There are five congrega- tions of Jehovah’s Witnesses on the North Shore. They have five meetings a week, from individual presentations on scripture, to discussions and study groups. “It’s the same program for every congregation across the world (as set out by the} Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society,” says Pysh. Much of the study helps Witnesses become qualified “ministers’’ in their dealings with the public about the Bible. All dedicated, baptized Witnesses are considered ministers. There is no hierarchical clergy, but there are elders (men only, according to scripture) who guide the meetings. When asked what he found to be the greatest misconception people have about Jehovah's Witnesses, Pysh paused momen- tarily and said, ‘‘It’s that we're there to bother them, as we go about our door-to-door ministry. We're sincere people, dedicated to doing what the Creator says true Christians should be doing.”’ For further information on the Jehovah's Witnesses call 929-8880.
