20 - Wednesday, September 5, 1990 - North Shore News Going green on the job orth Shore News N physical plant manager John Benner is a definite hero for the employees at the North Shore News who have long been pushing for a comprehensive in-house recycling system. Although the News was already recycling its newsprint and office paper, it’s only recently got a blue box system of multi-material recycling under way with the start-up help of International Paper Industries. John is enthusiastically promoting the program among employees and dedicating much of his time and energy to making sure materials are sorted correctly and collection by Environmental Commitment Operation is running smoothly. He is coordinating the collection of hard and soft plastics, glass and metal, and is hoping to one day expand into on-the-job composting. Companies or individuals are invited to nominate their own Eco-Hero. EcoUpdate ENSURING OUR FUTURE North Shore Recycling Program On August 28, 1990 the delivery of the Blue Boxes to North Shore homes began. Ail homes will receive their Blue Box by the end of September. The North Shore needs your help. When people recycle their newspapers, bottles, jars and cans, a lot of good things happen. Recyclers reduce their need for costly landfill sites. They save hundreds of thousands of trees, tankerloads of fuel, and millions of kilowatt hours of electric energy. You can make it all happen by taking part in this recycling program. Recycling is easy. Just follow the simple steps described here, {1 only takes a few minutes each week. Start today. We need your help! Plastic Pop Bottles & Milk Jugs All plastics are not the same, Please. only include plastic pop bottles and milk jugs for recycling. Discard all lids, caps and neckrings. Rinse con- tainers. Glass Bottles & Jars Remove and discard the lids, caps and neckrings and give these containers a quick rinse. Not ail glass is the same, so please, only recycle jars and bottles.
