LABOR AND Consumer Services Minister Norman
Jacobsen and North Vancouver-Capilano MILA
Angus Ree recently announced that Vancouver Art
Therapy Institute has received @ government grant ot
$4,100 under the TRY (The Responsibility is Yours)
program.

The funding will be used for an art therapy project
to help children and adolescents of alcoholic parents
who are in need of counselling, express and release
their feelings through art.

The institute will work in consultation with a net-
work of other agencies including the Squamish Indian
Band, North Vancouver's School District 44 Board

“These young people from dysfunctional homes are
potential substance abusers and require preventive
treatment,’’ said Ree. ‘Being able to express their
anxieues through the medium of art speeds the pro-
cess of treatment.”

Said Jacobsen: ‘The Vancouver Art Therapy In-
stitute was founded in 1982 as a mental health service
in the community and provides a graduate level train-
ing program for therapists. Art therapy is currently
offered in many of the local hospitals and by school
boards, and is proving to be a very effective treat-
ment.”"
