‘LET’S HOPE that the private schools in Vancouver will tell John Dixon, the Vancouver Sun, and other lights in Wimpland to switch off. St. George's School and Crof- ton House School have had the audacity to try to run their own affairs, you see, without interfer- euce from the Loony Left. And John Dixon and Co. say that won't do, Dixon being the head of the B.C. so-called Civil Liberties Association. The story wasn’t actually news. It was one of those things cooked up by the anti-WASP mob, and the Sun‘’s confusing front-page headline read: ‘‘Private schools admit to ‘appropriate ethnic What the paper was trying to Prove was that the school ad- ministrations were ‘racist’ in not accepting any and every Asian who knocked on their doors. There had been no public com- plaints about the racial make-up of either school, both of which have a heavy population of non-whites — 24 per cent in the case of St. George’s. But someone who thinks St. George should have been a Hindu must have gone snivelling to the Sun. It was then away to the races and a case of getting ““comment,”” which meant running to John Dix- on, who doubles ss an assistant professor of philosophy at CapHano College. Dixon said on cue — as the Sun knew lie would —- that he was “outraged”’ that the private schools were discriminating on the basis of race. In today’s self-destruct society there is no crime greater. But how can a school be ‘‘racist’? when 24 per cent of its students are Asians and East Indians? That presents no problem when an institution makes clear it has no intention of being totally swamped eee **...what’s wrong with St. George’s school wanting an ethnic mix that reflects the community, and would Dixon be yelling if the school preferred non-whites to whites?”’ es by the Asian Invasion, which is what St. George’s did; or when it admits it gets far more applications from Asians than it accepts, or when it wants ‘‘an ethnic mix that reflects the community”’ and is cheeky enough to have no English as a Second Language Sensibly, it requires students to know the language. Dixon pants heavily over all that and says his group would be pleas- ed to represent those who feel they have been discriminated against. You bet. * But discrimination is the stuff of standards. Everyone discriminates, including the B.C. Civil Liberties Association. Does the association have anyone on its board who can’t read, for example? If not, how about setting up a quota for the illiterate? Would 24 per cent be OK? More questions: what’s wrong with Ss. George’s school wanting an ethnic mix that reflects the community, and would Dixon be yelling if the school preferred non-whites to whites? I don’t think so, any more than he complains about affirmative action programs that discriminate against whites in the job market. As for ESL classes, they are the curse of the public schools. Which is why many parents send their kids to the private ones. That’s another reason for Dixon to complain, no doubt, just as he complained it was not up to the private schools to decide what the racial mix of the community is. Who is it up to, then? John Dixon? If you ask me, Dixon ain’t too bright — a common failing among assistant professors of philosophy. He was ‘“‘baffled,”* for example, that the schools would admit to what he calls discrimination. I’m baffled too. I’1in baffled that there could be anyone with his narrow-mindedness and lack of in- tellect running loose in the civil liberties game. I’m baffled that anyone who pretends to the ideals of civil liberties should want to deny private schools the right to run their own affairs. I’m baffled that he isn’t on the schools’ side. I shouldn't be, though, because most of these civil liberties gurus are budding Big Brothers and trumpets for the Left. Do this, don't do that. Conform! Let the private echools discriminate as much as they like. And let the Dixons put the accent on LIBERTY, a word which, thanks to them and to rags like the Sun is in danger of passing from the language@ EEE, eee Owner of messy land gets eteee | THE OWNER of property at 1812 Mathers Avenue has been given five weeks to do something about the untidiness of his premises, which are adjacent to West Var- couver Secondary School. The board, which has allowed Bradley access to his property via school property, is unhappy with the owner's use of such access to dump fill on his land. A decision was made to permit continuing access only for Bradley - to clean up the property, and not after that. Bradley explained that he is in the process of constructing a garage on the property, but is awaiting a development permit from the municipal hall. But he can’t get that until he ac- quires a report from a structural engineer. “‘He was aware previously of a pavingstones and sla! te All work fully guaranteed Coloured interlocking concrete Beautiful, economical and perfectly SPRING SPECIAL! % All sizes of work undertaken BEAUTIFY YOUR HOME! & Free Estimates w 984-3237 need for this.
