Children need to know about AIDS

IN THIS age of AIDS, telling our
children the facts of life has never
been so difficult — or so vitally
important. Because the fact is,
AIDS is spreading, and the only
way to Stop it is through education
—— learning about the disease and
what we must do to avoid it.

AIDS is caused by a virus which
attacks and destroys the body’s
natural defences. There is no cure
for AIDS and no vaccine against
it. People with AIDS can easily get
rare types of cancer, pneumonia
and infection. Then they become

ill and die — not from AIDS, but
from these secondary diseases that
their bodies are unable to resist.
Since the first case of AIDS was
reported in B.C. in 1983, the
number of new cases has increased
significantly each year. AIDS does
not respect age. Of the 446 cases of
AIDS reported in B.C. by Nov. 10
this year, two were under 20, 87
were between 20 and 29, 184 be-
tween 30 and 39, 130 between 40
and 49, and 43 were over 50.
Anyone can get AIDS. Certain
peonle — for exarnple. those who

have casual relationships or who
use drugs — are less safe than
others. Every time peuple with
AIDS share body fluids while
Practising unsafe sex, or share a
syringe or IV needle while using
drugs, they share the AIDS virus

The good news is that the risk of
becoming infected by transfusions
of blood or blood products is ex-
tremely low because strict testing
procedures have been in place for
all blood donations since
November, 1985.

By the end of December, 1987,
health care workers estimated that
between 6,000 and 10,000 people
in B.C. were infected with the
AIDS virus. In the early stages of
infection, people carrying the
AIDS virus in their bodies usually
look and feel normal. But anyone
who is infected — even a healthy
carrier — can pass on the virus to
others.

The only way to avoid AIDS is
to avoid high-risk behavior. That
means staying away from casual
relationships, always using a con-

dom, and being aware that saying
no — to sex and drug use — makes
sense. If you practise safe sex and
don’t share needles, chances are
you won't get AIDS.

Hardly a day goes by without an
opportunity to talk with your
children about AIDS. There are
TV programs, newspaper and
magazine stories, and public
forums. There are excellent books
and pamphlets, including ‘‘Talking
