forth Shore students achieve in contest NINE STUDENTS from North Shore schools, including three from Hillside Middle School, finished in the top three of their respective grades in the 12th Annual Hillside Public Speaking Contest. A total of 65 students from 16 Lower Mainland and Abbotsford schools took part in the Oct. 25 competition. Students from Grades 8 through 12 were limited to four-minute speeches. The Grade 7 speakers were limited to three minutes. Competitors were allowed a minute’s leeway on either side of their allotted speech times. Speakers registered between 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. the day of the competition, and were allowed to research their speeches for only the two hours prior to speaking. Speeches were judged on mate- rial and organization, delivery, personal appeal of the speaker and overall effectiveness and originality of the speech by an 18-judge panel, which included individuals from both the schools and the com- munity. Hillside’s Melissa Ander finished first overall in the Grade 7 divi- sion, followed by Jessica Baert from York House. Nike Grey from Hillside and Sonia Huzyk from _ Lochdale Community School tied for third place. In the Grade 8 speak-off, Aynsley Wong from York House finished first ahead of Lindsay Moore from Collingwood. Megan Long from Hillside and Jeff Bailey from Maillard Junior Secondary tied for third place.
