Council had originally voted to . which . consider the new bylaw, would allow binge and casino halls to operate as accessory uses in. specific commercial zones in the district, but : the majority . of - members iow say they oppose any bylaw which would allow the ex- pansion of gambling 5 in commercial zones. - Ald. Bill Rodgers, who original- ly supported the bylaw, said he changed his mind after hearing much opposition on the proposed bylaw from churches and from - district residents. Said Ald Ernie Crist: ‘tA lot of people in the community think this (gambling) will ‘become a terrible thing, so I withdraw my support (of the bylaw ).°° : A: final decision on the bylaw will not be made until the matter goes before a public hearing on May 16. The City of North Vancouver voted in April to prohibit all bingo - and casino events operated by. pro- fessional casino management companies, but allowed bingo in non-profit societies to continue. Ald. Joan Gadsby said she hopes that district council will follow the city’s example. The gambling bylaw was ‘in- troduced because the district's ex- isting bylaw docs not specificaily prohibit bingo or casino halls as accessory uses. It would ensure that gambling halls are not operated as full-time principle uses in permanent halls, and prevent the construction of “new buildings or the conversion of existing buildings for such opera- tions. on. sick _lea ve Qin 149° Do 1 BO Reel AD 2 @woopwagp’s TATE — _yfiermable of Transparerd 3101 49. each BAD ss eoen A 49. each I AD coon 49 vues eocn LAD Sud 49. : Bel, AD . “ecct 49 ; . own I 49. fon 06 Diameters... aa ‘ ne con AD : each 49 Bod A9 ;
