Okanagan Express gets ready to race AT MIDNIGHT on June § the starting gun will sound to begin the second annual Realty World Okanapan Express Relay, a 302- mile foot race from Vancouver to Summerland. Nearly 20 teams of up to 26 runners per team will be competing in the race which is the longest in North America. The race began as an idea to celebrate both Expo 86 and the opening of the Coquihaila High- way and became a reality with 16 teams completing the course last year, With 26 stages on the relay and distances varying from 5.9 miles to 18 miles, the tiring and fogistically demanding event took the runners out Of Vancouver through Mis- sion, Hope, Merritt, Princeton, Keremeos, Penticton and into Summerland where they were greeted by the crowds attending the Summerland Action Festival. This festival is a weekend of sports events and cultural activities that draws visitors from all over the Pacific Northwest. North Vancouver's Lions Gate Roadrunners were in a class of their own last year, finishing first in just over 29% hours. All teams finished in under 40 hours in- cluding the second-place Los Angeles Police Department, which finished in just over 32 hours with the minimum 13 runners. Due to the very positive response of those who took part, the race management team decided to make the Okanagan Express Relay an annual event.
