One hundred and twenty-eight three and four year olds from the church’s preschool brought food and gifts for the occasion. Lynn Valley Centre 985-0716 ew Year's 2 babies promote FOR THE fourth year, 89 new year’s babies will get a safer ride home from the hospital thanks to a gift from the B.C. Medical Association (BCMA) and the doc- tors of the province. The BCMA will present an in- fant safety seat to the first 1987 baby born in all B.C. hospitals where babies are delivered. ‘Even though the use of restraint systems for children under six has been mandatory for almost two years now, parents are still not using, or installing them correctly,’’ said Dr. David Jones, BCMA communications committee chairman. “The added force of an improp- erly secured seat can catapult a child through a window or into knobs or other protrusions, caus- ing terrible damage to the head and face.”” Less than 25 per cent of B.C. children under five are properly restrained in motor vehicles, ac- cording to the 1986 Car Seat Safe- ty Inspection. When properly used, infant and child restraints can reduce fatalities by 90 per cent, and disabling inju- ries by 65 to 70 per cent. In 1985, seven B.C. children were killed, and 573 injured in motor vehicle accidents, as com- pared with 12 deaths and 590 inju- ries in 1984, before child restraint devices became mandatory March 4, 1985.
