44 - Sunday, December 7, 1986 - North Shore News ed ae Pee” \ 73 EXPERIENCED STAFF Hair sal on is a cut above rest LOOKING FOR a new hair Style but just can’t decide what’s for you? Look into Donald James Hair Design in the Park Royal Mall for well-trained and experienced staff who know what hair is all about and how to handle it. “All my staff have been (in the hair business) for 20 years or more,’’ says manager Donald McRae. ‘‘There’s four of us at present and I’m adding three.” And this experience shows where it really counts — on your hair. Before the scissors come out, the consultation process begins. ‘‘We prefer this because with some of the new clients it’s hard to know what they want. “We'll sit down and talk to them about what they want to do,”’ he says, ‘“‘Maybe something upbeat or whatever, but we try to determine the lifestyle.”’ Then the staff member will perhaps make some suggestions. For those who would like to see what their new style might look like before the styling starts, Donald James has magazines with full-sized photos. The shop carries a wide range of hair-care products and boasts the largest selection in West Van- couver. And these products are from the top of the line. McRae learned his extensive product knowledge while spending a year in Hawaii and says that all of the products used at the shop have been already tried. “We try them out,”’ he says. “We're constantly having classes because we want to know all about it (the product) before we use it.’’ McRae and all his staff know where the products go and where they don’t. Different hair conditions mean different approact.es and al! pro- ducts will not work in al! situations — or they might have to be applied in a certain order. “If one of you has dry hair and the other has split ends you might use the same products but in a dif- ferent order,’ McRae says in ex- planation. As well, McRae and the folks at Donald James Hair Design always look for the best way to do things — best for the customer that is. There are so many ways to do things, he says, that it takes an ex- perienced person to know what’s what. For instance, a customer won’t walk out of the shop with a high- care style that’s difficult to manage if the style is not appropriate for that person. Right now, the shop is offering a number of specials on hair ser- vices. One of these is a product special on fine Joico line products. The customer gets a shampoo and condition of the best-suited Joico product depending on hair type, and gets a two-ounce bottle to take home. ‘‘When_ they’re finished using it they can come back and get 15 per cent off on their next Joico product.” And shoppers don’t have to have their hair styled to shop for Christmas gifts at Donald James. “Tf we don’t have it we'll make an effort to get it.”’ Offering a selection of Christmas gift items, the shop is a must see for this season’s shopp- ing. Offering a full selection of ac- cessories, there’s everything from stocking stuffers, to curling irons to hair service gift certificates. A Joico Christmas pack that retails for about $14 is on sale for under $10; a special Mastay package that retails for $17 is right now on sale for $12.95. Also on special is a Scruples perm, ‘‘It's been back East for a See Salon Page 45 THERE ARE ypifts, gifts and more giffs at Donald James Hair Design in Park Royal.
