Maureen Ciarniello, president of the West Vancouver Teachers’ Association, said School District 45 offered a 1:6 per cent salary in- crease, but teachers in other districts are receiving an increase of about three per cent. Margot Furk, chairman of the district's bargaining committee, agreed its salary offer is ‘‘slightly lower’’ than other Lower Mainland districts. But she said the Offer is reasonable if the district i is - able to maintain. -the same level of services. Furk noted the district has the second lowest pupil-teacher ratio in the Lower Mainland, ‘which in 1985 was 17.63 students per teach- er. ; In 1985 the average West Van- couver teacher salary was $38,220, while the provincial average is 7 $37,190. Teachers are contracted to, work 200 days a year. The salary dispute must now go to ‘arbitration, since the two sides did not meet the May 1 Ministry of - Education ‘ deadline on salary negotiations. . Starting Tuesday . KIM PEMBERTON -— News Reporter \ Said Ciarniello: ‘‘Teachers are miffed with salary, but the real anger is the board’s attitude. “*This board really does not give a damm about teachers, and it’s about time we look at how much we’re going to give.”” She said 200 teachers (out of about 300), who attended an association meeting, voted 85 per .cent in favor of restricting their work to the classroom. She said this means teachers’ won’t assist in extracurricular school activities if the second set of negotiations on job security fails by the May 15 deadline. But Furk said: ‘I believe the district.has made some strong ef- forts over the last. year to protect jobs. : if you increase teachers’ salaries ‘you have less money - fm available ‘for other things,” she Said, Ciarn’ illo said teachers are upset - .
