B15 - Wednesday, May 18, 1983 - North Shore News AUTO MAILBAG Dear Editor: Several papers have published advertisements and news articles claiming that tetraethy] lead should be removed from the gasoline we use and that the Federal . Environment Minister, John Roberts, has proposed a plan to remove or reduce the gasoline lead content by 1985. We don't dispute the possible dangers of an in- ordinate amount of lead in our environment, but we dis- members have vehicles with engines that require the presence of lead for valve lengevity and_ anti- detonation qualities, but essentially all pre-1975 vehicles driven on our highways (and some late models), have the same requirements. Special valves and pistons can be retro-fitted to many engines, but they are not available for many older cars. Any parts that are available would be in such removed that any stocked items would rapidly be used with no replacements. Additives which increase the octane rating of gasoline, and as a result decrease pre- detonation, are expensive and can be purchased, but do nothing for valve life. Pre-detonation (commonly known as “pinging” or “knocking’’) can punch holes in pistons and cylinder heads, break piston rings, blow head gaskets, or in other words, ruin an engine. chamber deposits with unleaded ‘gas, but that is poor compensation for decreased valve life. Since the lower octane rating of unleaded gas demands less cylinder pressure at fuel ignition, less spark advance can be tolerated _- resulting in decreased efficiency (higher fuel consumption) and performance. . Ae There are many people who drive older vehicles by choice or necessity. Those models and are having difficulty coping with high gasoline prices cannot be expected to handle the increased maintenance costs if the opportunity to buy leaded gasoline is removed. Not only private vehicles, but the large commercial fleets, boats, aircraft, motor- cycles and stationary engines (even lawnmowers) would be affected. The cost to our economy of drastic increases in parts and maintenance could be staggering! Simple solutions for lead in gasoline practical solution to this problem is simply to require newly manufactured vehicles that are sold in Canada to be able to operate efficiently on unleaded gasoline. This would decrease the number of vehicles using leaded gasoline by natural attrition to that amount which no longer would pose a threat to our environment. L.A. Uddy, Sec. Special Vehicle demand if lead is reduced or There are less combustion who cannot afford newer We believe that the Associationof B.C. agree with the knee-jerk solutions proposed and we believe that if all citizens were made aware of all the ° costs involved (not just the higher price of non-leaded gas), they might hold a similar rational opinion.
