Van A shortage of trained professionals looms for B.C. and for Canada as a whole in the next 10 years if govern- ment funding of post- secondary education is cut back, a prominent Van- couver academic warned last week. 6 a BE Dr. George Pederson, president of Simon Fasér University, told a luncheon meeting of the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce at the Canyon | Gardens Restaurant that university funding must take into account not only the . benefits to individuals but - also the “social benefits” to | the community and the nation. In the past, he said, B.C. had been able to rely on importing some significant - proportion of the professional talent it needs from other provinces and from other countries, thus saving the cost of training such professionals. The same was true of Canada overall in respect of im- migration from abroad. Now, however, the im- ” migration flow is drying up both nationally and. provincially, Pedersen told his audience. Within the next decade, for example, a shortfall of some _ 17,000 engineers is threatened unless they can be produced by our own universities. These changed con- ditions, he said, point up the importance of providing educational opportunities for our own young people in B.C. to fill the professional void being created by the growing shortage of im- ported talent.
