A15 - Wednesday, August 12, 1981 - North Shore News Ee community round up Forgetful readers beware at Seycove! One of the most expensive and annoying problems fac- ing a hbrary today is the loss of books through their un- authonzed removal from the building. A few of these books find their way back to the shelves, but the majority do not, and have eventually to be withdrawn from the catalogue Losses from libraries must be counted in| more than monetary terms missing books are a source of incon- venience and irritation to patrons as well as a drain on the library's staff time and budget Worse, many books are out-of-print or for other reasons irreplaceable, and their loss represents an infor- mation pap that cannot be castly filled Users of the Seveove Branch of North Vancouver Distnet Library may soon expect to see book losses at their library drastically reduced. The hbrary, which is shared by the District and Seycove Community School, is installing a security system which has prosed very effec: tive in reducing losses in other lbranes throughout North America Similar systems are already in use sn high schools in North Vancouver, and in several other public hbranes in the Lower Mainland. The system 1s safe. effective and simple. and involves no ma- yor change in library routines Books and other library materials are checked out in the usual way. but if a book iworemoved from the hbrary without being properly charged out, an alarm will sound. Absent-mindedness and thoughtlessness probably ac- count for more book losses than deliberate theft. the alarm will act as both reminder and_— deterrent. Because the library 1s located adjacent to both the school and the community wing. the system has been designed so that books that have already been checked out need not be re-charged if the patron” re-enters” the library. The only real difference that most library patrons will notice will be that the annoy- Ing wait for “missing” books will be eliminated The library hopes to have the system operational by the beginning of the school year in September Wedding Belles ALGUST 1S has been set for the wedding of Robyn Joy McQuat, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry McQuat, to (,regory Arthur Bohn, son of Mi and Mrs) Arthur Bohn. both of North Van.
