MOIST AND MISTY are not the ideal conditions for some nice outdoor activity but then nobody said rugby was a nice sport. Here, the Capilano Rugby Club held a practise match at Carson Graham-field between their under 23 team (in black) and some older members known as the Old Codgers. The under 23's are preparing to compete in a tournament in San Diego. (Terry Peters photo) t's a fun game Why do I feel guilty admitting I enjoy Indoor Soccer? Perhaps because I feel surrounded by all these sophisticated experts who sneer so snidely whenever the subject of this relatively new game comes up. But I think I'm at the stage where I'm quite prepared to tell them to ‘get stuffed’ or some equally pleasant bit. | like the game. Oh, I know it will never take the place of the outdoor variety. 1 wouldn't want to see that happen. And if I had my choice of a good outdoor game and a good indoor onc, the outdoor varicty would win every time. However, I enjoy the six- a-side format for an evenings entertainment. There is plenty of end to end action with non-stop running, some hard shoot- ing, and some exciting goal mouth action with all the rebounds. And what appeals to me 1s the non-violent aspect of the sport. Maybe it’s o sign of encroaching age, but! cannot become excited over Indoor big in Austria cheap shots, butt ending, spearing, or grating some poor soul along the boards or driving same _ through those boards. The speed, the skill and the chaos of a rebounding ball bouncing among all these flailing Iegs holds a certain appeal. And the players too are beginning to find themselves caught up in the sport. At a recent game in- volving the Toronto Bliz- zard, members of both the Whitecaps and Blizzard found themselves more intense than most would have thought possible at the beginning of the scason when they were playing only because they had to. Mind you, in any athletic competition, the truc pro will find himself caught up in the struggle and the VIENNA (UPI) - Indoor soccer has again been tho big hit in Austria during the recent holidays with about 30,000 tournament contested by the a fans watching a- adrenilin will do what the mind won't. That particular game turned out to be a tough, fast competition with no quarter being asked or given. Many of the players, and we're talking about the regular name outdoor players rather than those who are brought in strictly to fill in the indoor roster, have been wondering just what they have to do to arouse the interest of more fans. The directors are asking them- selves the same questions. With an average of 2,600 per game, it is obvious that no one is going to become nch in a hurry. The losses mount up while those few who show up feel they have certainly had their moncy’s worth. For the Whitecaps under Derek Possece and Buzz Parsons, it has, to date, becn a successful scason. The team, a mixture of regulars and newcomers, has shown a toughness and a come from top clubs of Vienna and an old time team from Hungary. A big attraction, in ad- dition to local teams. Rapid and Pirst Vienna, was the behind spirit that would be the envy of any team in any sport. It’s a darn good game for the spectators. So there! een AND WHILE ON THE subject of soccer, the North Shore is starting to make an impression on the soccer world. With the recent drafting of Wayne Shaw and Barry Dearden, Whitecaps give Hans Granander some company from the night side of Burrard Inlet. At the same time, Tony Pensato has been fingered out by Tampa Bay Rowdies. Also in the NASL, Brian and Bruce Gant, both of Portland Timbers are former North Shore residents. Another young man making his mark in the soccer world is Des Webster. Des, formerly with Norvans is currently with Morton in Scotland. Look for him to eventually end up somewhere in the North American = Soccer League. Two Whitecaps who have moved to the North Shore are GM and president Tony Waiters, who has been here for a couple of scasons now, and Bob Lenarduzzi, who recently purchased a home in North Van.
