Joyce Campbell, Nursing Director, says the move is made to level out the great surge of visitors in the late afternoon. It is also to ac- commodate the many people who work shifts. “ee There are a few éx- ceptions, but most wards will now be open to visitors from. 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily. Hours are even longer for parents visiting their children,. for ‘new fathers _ Visiting their wives on the maternity floor and for close relatives visiting the in- tensive care unit. The Extended Care Unit has always had visiting from early morning to 8:00 p.m. and this will continue. _ A few areas have shorter hours. They are coronary cafe unit and the Activation Wing. Extending visiting hours is a matter of controversy. On one hand, relatives and friends want to visit as freely as possible. On the other hand, nurses and doctors @ the. at often express concern that too much visiting is too tiring © for many patients. - 4 , Mrs. Campbell comments that with extension of visiting, nurses will have to ‘keep an eye on patients to ensure that no one gets an overdose of well-meaning visitors. She reminds visitors that a short, quiet visit is great for a patients’ morale. But, she adds, patients tire quickly. She also recommends that visitors do not smoke in a patient’s room. Smoke can be irritating and -even nauseating to a tecovering patient. : Children may visit in most areas with permission. Their parents should check with about the Head Nurse specific regulations.
