' If so, you’re not alone. Psychological studies have shown that Christmas can be hard for many people. That’s because many of us have high hopes and expectations for happiness at this time of year. Unfortunately, the reality we experience may be very dif- ferent and very disappointing. Maybe this is the year to make some changes. As a first step, try talking with other people about Christmas. Sharing your problems may not solve them, but by bringing them out into the open you can at least plan how to make changes in the future. What’s hard for you? Are you fed up with Christmas shopping? Do you feel trapped by family tradi- tions? Do you wish your family got along better? If you know the problem, at least. you can take steps to change things. But sometimes it’s hard to pinpoint the. prob- lem when you're upset. If so, you might need to talk with a health care professional, such as a nurse. A professional can. offer an objective view- point and help you decide how you might handle a problem. Maybe you just need to sot OUT YOUR MAZDA change your approach to Christmas, For example, stop saying, ‘‘! always overdo it,’ and do it differently. If you are booked up to the last minute, take less important items off your ‘‘To Do’’ list. Then make sure you have lots of spare time for unplanned fun, relaxation, and those you love best. ; {f you want to make changes in the way your family cele- brates Christmas, do try. After all, nothing can possibly change unless someone like yourself makes the first move. Begin with one specific sug- gestion about what you would like to have happen. Avoid blaming anyone or anything for the way things have been. Describe what you would like to do differently and ask others for their ideas. oo: Listen carefully to their thoughts and. feelings about your suggestion and alter your proposal if necessary. ‘ Be patient. It may be too soon to implement your. sug- gestion this year but it may take root in 1994. And realize that some changes may work and others wili not. : You can't be blamed for everything that doesn’t work. But you can take credit: for trying to actively shape your Christmas season so that it, better fits your own needs and | aspirations. : Gail Dal-Santo is ‘a . regis- tered nurse and a health pro- motion consultant with. the.
