It’s also great to be able to share our favourite books with friends or family mem- bers. Recently, I talked to sever- al avid readers. who enjoy dis- cussing their reading choices with friends. This is where I learned about the many book clubs on the North Shore. My first stop when I start- ed looking at these clubs was a unique book stare, called 32 Books, on East 14th Street just off Lonsdale. Mary Trentadue, owner of this store, is not only a book lover but a great supporter of clubs for readers. In cooperation with the “Vancouver Public Library, she _ has developed the Book Club “Club,” which encourages groups to get together to set -_ up special interest clubs such or Mother and . There is a as Men’s On: Daughter clu - newsletter that outlines “hot new books” and reading » aides that are available: from wablic libraries. Speaking of libraries, I learned ftom Bev Field, coa- vener of a book club orga- nized by the West Vancouver University Women’s Club, thar the library has been invaluable to their members. This club meets monthly in members” homes to discuss the book selected by the group as a whole. Because of the large and varied member- ship of the group — there are 20 -—~ Bev says: “I have read books that E wouldn’t ordi- narily have chosen.” Members do research at the West Vancouver library, including reading reviews from other sources, They have discussed many books over the years — rvo of the must recent being Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Gold and Endurance by Caroline | Alexander. Bev was chosen to review Endurance 2nd became so interested in this story of the Antarctic explorer, Shackleton, that she bought the book for herself. It is a beautifully illustrated volume with many old photographs and maps. I conid hardly tear myself away. Another feature of a book club can be the opportunity to have a local author meet with the group — not to do a reading, but to hear from readers what they thought about their work. Blanche. Howard, a well- known author and playwright ONGOING” MARY Trentadue of 32 Books offers: avid readers advice on how to stert a book club. . with Carel Sheilds, another rize-winning author, has een the subject of heated discussion.
